The Ultimate
Internet
Business
By Mark "Wizzer" Wilson
Why An Affiliate Business Is The
Ultimate Internet Business
Although there are many types of business you can run from home I have
no doubt that the ultimate
internet business is an affiliate business. I’ve run a
service business for the past 15 years and
although I love working from home even this business has a list of
challenges. The main problems are
having to travel to visit clients, the cost of overheads and the
complete lack of service from
suppliers.
In fact, as great as it sounds to be your own boss the challenges of a
“traditional” business often
outweigh the benefits. So much so, that despite making a good income
from this business I decided I
had to find another “way” or it would drive me
insane.
I started dabbling on the internet, looking at what I could do but my
mindset was all about
providing a service as I’d been used to.
At some point several years ago, I can’t remember exactly
when, I read an article or report about
affiliate marketing and everything fell in place. No overheads, no
stock, no customer fulfilment
problems, no product to design and provide, no staff – now I
was very interested!
As I thought further I realised that most of the challenges I saw with
other businesses I’d tried
simply were not there:
Firstly, you don't have to spend months (or longer) creating a product.
I've done this in the past
with a software program where the end date just kept getting pushed
back and back. All the time
there was no income coming in but money going out to the software
developers. Ouch!
With an affiliate business you leave all that hard work to someone else
and just get on with the
real job of getting that product in front of someone you think will
benefit from it and spend some
of their hard earned money on the solution you proposed.
An affiliate business is a bit like running a specialist store but
without all of the hassle. You
decide the market you want to serve (I strongly recommend it's a market
you have a real interest in)
and then find suitable products for that market.
Unlike running a specialist store where you have the cost of the shop,
the cost of heating lighting
to keep the store open, insurance, possibly staff and certainly a good
stock of a variety of
products - an affiliate business needs none of this. All that is
required is a way of getting
someone else's product in front of the end customer.
DON'T BE
MISLED, however, you absolutely MUST find a way of getting
the name and email address of your customer BEFORE you send them to the
affiliates store (i.e. their website). It is all too easy
to find an suitable affiliate product, get the required link and then
promote that. That is a fatal
mistake made by the vast majority of people trying to make some money
online.
Without the contact details of the potential customer you have no way
of following up or checking
whether the offer was of any interest. That is why it is imperative you
have at least a one page
website (a blog will do the trick just as well) where you capture your
visitors name and email
address. You then need to develop a relationship with that person and
show your knowledge of the
particular market.
There are other ways without having to create a site yourself that I'll
be explaining in the upcoming
editions.
